48 Laws Of Power: Book of the Week

I’ve become more and more interested in non-fiction self help books. Mostly because I love to learn new and informative ideas on how I can improve my life and the results I obtain from my actions. To me any book or video that can cut the learning curve is something that I want to absorb. This week I was referred to by a friend about the “48 laws of Power”- by Robert Greene.

This book is a must read and an instant favorite of mine. Robert Greene breaks down all 48 laws to obtaining and keeping power. This can be used in business, politics, and even our daily lives. Greene supports each law with amazing historical examples, which are interesting and informative. Below I have some of my favorite laws which I find useful.

Law 1

Never Outshine The Master

“Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. in your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite- inspire fear and insecurity.” – Robert Greene


In order to gain power it is important for you not to show all your talents to your “master” because if you do so they may begin to feel you are showing off and that will never lead to your accumulation of power!

Law 13

When Asking For Help, Appeal To People’s Self-Interest, Never To Their Mercy Or Gratitude.

“If you need to turn to an ally for help, do not bother to remind him of you past assistance and good deeds. He will find a way to ignore you. Instead, uncover something in your request, or in you alliance with him, that will benefit him, and emphasize it out of all proportion. He will respond enthusiastically when he sees something to be gained for himself.” – Robert Greene

tyrion-lannister This law was one of my favorites because it is extremely true! I’ve personally dealt with people who I asked them to help me with something because I had done good deeds for them in the past, only to be ignored! It is a frustrating feeling, and one that I now know how to combat! In HBO’s series The Game Of Thrones- Tyrion Lannister constantly uses this tactic by asking people “what do you want” often times they will tell him through either their actions or words. From that point he uses that knowledge to further his gains and power by giving them what they want. Charisma on Command made a great video on this power topic. Click here to watch that video.

Law 30

Make Your Accomplishments Seem Effortless

“Your actions must seem natural and executed with ease. All the toil and practice that goes into them, and also all the clever tricks, must be concealed. When you act, act effortlessly, as if you could do much more. Avoid the temptation of revealing how hard you work-it only raises questions. Teach no one your tricks or they will be used against you.” – Robert Greene

08-effortlessI’m fairly good at editing videos, I did it all throughout high school and even in college. Often times when people view these videos they are extremely impressed with how fast and well put together I can create these videos. By not explaining to them the hours and hours of edited and coming up with the ideas for the videos, people perceive my video accomplishments as pure talent, thus helping one to accumulate power.

Law 33

Discover Each Man’s Thumbscrew

“Everyone has a weakness, a gap in the castle wall. That weakness is usually an insecurity, an uncontrollable emotion or need; it can also be a small secret pleasure. Either way, once found, it is a thumbscrew you can turn to your advantage.” – Robert Greene

downloadThis law is one of the darker laws of power. It’s base is to find one’s weakness and exploit it for your own personal gain. The benefit in knowing this law however is of immense value, because once you learn and apply this law not only will you be able to get others to work for your own benefit, you will also be able to see it being done to you, and can prevent others from manipulating your own weaknesses.

Law 41

Avoid Stepping In A Great Man’s Shoe’s

“What happens first always appears better and more original than what comes after. If you succeed a great man or have a famous parent, you will have to accomplish double their achievements to outshine them. Do not get lost in their shadow, or stuck in a  past not of your own making, Establish you own name and identity by changing course. Slay the overbearing father, disparage his legacy, and gain power by shining in your own way.” – Robert Greene


In the book Robert Greene uses Alexander The Great as his subject. Alexander The Great’s father had just been assassinated and Alexander had to rule the kingdom. Alexander despised the way his father had ruled, his advisors told him to do things like his father Phillip, however Alexander did not listen to them and pursued his own path. “He marched to the furtherest reaches of his kingdoms and secured rebellious towns and reunited his empire with brutal efficiency.”- Robert Greene.

Even in today’s world I can think of some people who are creating their own paths and stepping out of their father’s shoe’s. Jaden and Willow Smith, son and daughter to Will Smith the famous american actor. Jaden and Willow at an early age pursued their own paths in music, fashion and business all before the age of 18! They refused to “step in a great man’s shoe’s” instead they are creating their own shoe’s to be filled someday.


This book was insightful, entertaining, practical, and very informative. I learned a great deal about how the use of power has been around since the dawn of time and how many rulers, politicians, and everyday people use it to conquer their enemies. While the topic of power has a general negative connotation, I believe it is important to learn the art of power, and use it for good purposes. If you are someone like myself, this is definitely the book for you. Great examples and extremely practical when applied to your everyday life.

My Life as a Recent College Graduate

My life as a recent college graduate.

Graduating from college was a challenge and a thrill for me. It challenged me in many ways and caused me to grow to become a better person, and I’m grateful for that, however I find myself in a bit of a stand still.

When I returned from college I made it a priority to read and learn all that I could. I read over 15 books this summer and watched several lectures on self improvement and spirituality. All of these subjects have lead me to where I am today. I’m that much closer to discovering and realizing my purpose but I feel a bit lost, in need of a path in which I can direct my energy.

My degree is is exercise science, and while I love whole heartedly to be healthy and help others I do not want to go to work for a company and train people. I have big ideas, big dreams, and a hunger to do something amazing with my life, especially given our short time on this planet. I want to create things, change the way we view each other and our bodies, and leave a lasting mark. One that my future children will be proud of. I’m worried that if I work at a safe secure job I will change from a curious, fun loving, creative person into someone dull, and desensitized to our beautiful world.

The Kanye West 30 Hours Workout

Kanye West recently came out with a track off of his “The Life Of Pablo” album titled 30 hours.

There’s one part of this song when Kanye says…

I wake up, all veggies no eggs

I hit the gym all chest no legs

Yep, then I made myself a smoothie

Yeah, then me and wifey make a movie

Well I thought it would be fun to come up with a workout routine that embodies Kanye West’s Gym Philosophy. But first lets break down what each lyric says about his Diet / Workout preferences.

I wake up, all veggies no eggs 

So right off the bat Kanye hops out of bed and goes straight for the greens! Odds are Kanye is planning on blending these veggies into a smoothie of some sorts, because I don’t see him eating steamed spinach or a kale salad before preforming before millions. (he might get some veggies stuck in his teeth)yzma-teeth


While eggs are normally a good food to consume for breakfast (due to their high protein amount and their perfect balance of protein to fat to carbohydrate ratio) it seems Kanye prefers to get a health amount of veggies.

The benefits of eating veggies are

  1. Great energy source
  2. High in vitamins and minerals
  3. low in calories but very filling
  4. easy for your digestive system to break down
  5. if you consume them early in the day you no longer have to worry about getting your daily greens in for the rest of the day

Now this lyric I don’t fully agree with but hey who could argue with Ye.

Kanye doesn’t have time for some wimpy leg workouts, he’s a man, heck according to him he’s a god… ( I’ll save that for another time)

chest-no-legs1All chest and no legs is not a good approach to take when planning to build muscle. It makes your body super strong in one aspect but also very weak in another aspect. (Warning Bad Puns Ahead) I guess Kanye cares more about some asPEC’s of his fitness more than other ASSpects.

After his one sided workout Kanye makes himself a smoothie. Good for you Kanye! A smoothie, especially a protein smoothie is one of the best post workout meals you can consume.smoothie A protein smoothie replenishes and repairs the torn muscles fibers and helps your muscle to grow back Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger.


Yeah, then me and wifey make a movie

Well…um, I guess this would fall under the “cardio” category. According to an article I read, “A mere 25 minutes of sex — we’re figuring 10 minutes of foreplay, 15 minutes for the main event — burns 88 calories if you’re a 150-pound woman, 106 calories for a 180-pound guy. That’s the same energy you’d expend doing a light workout on a rowing machine or stationary bike.” Read that article here. sexfactI’m pretty sure if you were married to Kim Kardashian you would also get your daily cardio in that way. How to Make a Blog and or Website for Free

Have you wanted to create your very own website? I always have, but I didn’t have the knowledge or skills to do so. Recently I decided to change up my blog formate and give it a facelift. I searched on google, and many other websites on the best way to make a blog and came across a guy named Tyler Moore.

He is an experienced web page designer and he posts most of his work on his Youtube and Website. He is so experienced that he even created his own theme called the Tesseract Theme, which he lets you download for free! Staying Consistent: Three Sure Fire Ways To Achieve Any Goal

Consistency is key. Whether you are consistent with your job, loved ones, or even your diet, staying consistent is extremely important.

Why is consistency so important?

When you dedicate time towards a goal, you are more likely to achieve that goal. You can say “this year I’m going to get that body I’ve always dreamed of”, but then as soon as you go home you decide to whip out a pint of Ben & Jerry’s mint chocolate chip ice-cream and eat they whole carton! You’re not consistent, and therefore you will not reach your goals.

No one respects inconsistency, and it is often very frustrating to say we’re going to do something and make a change but suddenly we give up and become inconsistent. We all want to achieve our goals and get the reward of working towards a better “me”, and thats why we have to remain consistent. But since we struggle from time to time we need a plan of action to overcome our inconsistency’s.


Here’s What You Can Do

1) Accountability
Tell someone close to you about your goal. Having someone to hold you accountable to your word is a great motivator. especially when dieting.

2) Create a Mantra
Internal motivation is the most powerful and moving form of encouragement you can use. Create a mantra or saying to say to yourself to help you stay on track and consistent. This can be anything from “you can do this” to “I will be the best me I can be”. I have personally used mantras to help keep me motivated, and they work!

3) Find an external source of motivation
This can be as simple as a motivational quote that you use as your lock screen on your phone, to other external sources of motivation such as a youtube video, or a famous speech by an athlete. External motivation, while not as powerful as an internal motivation, will help you to keep going and working towards your goals.
