Challenge and change are essential in growing up. I recently had a very fortunate summer. I graduated from college and went on a trip in search of who I was, and the direction in which I wanted to take my life post education. I needed a challenge.
I could think of no better companion for this trip than my cousin Justin, and no better place to travel to than Iceland.
My cousin Justin and I are very similar, both of us are the same age, love the outdoors, and both of us had just graduated college. We have grown up each summer together and shared so many close memories, he’s my best friend. So it was only natural that we would go take a trip to a place were we could explore and celebrate our liberation from school.
On this trip I was able to experience so many new things. In preparing for this trip I knew we would be exploring, hiking, taking in the beauty of the landscape, but what I didn’t account for were all of the new personal experiences I would experience, and the challenges that some would bring.
The local people had different customs and culture, even a unique language. Adapting to this was challenging but I felt comfortable after a day or two. This was my first trip on my own, and I got to experience some of the first hand travel pressures. This was nerve wrecking but positively exciting. Even small things like booking a rental car to pick you up from the airport and not having it show up on time was extremely stressful. To top that off, once we picked up the car, we discovered the “check engine light” was on. And no one at the car place was willing to help us. This was a big challenge for us. Needless to say we survived the trip and the car did just fine. But the overall experience of being on you own to fend for yourself was new to me and exciting, no matter how stressful it was in the moment.
I also was able to experience living with my cousin for eleven days. Now even though we are super similar (we share the same favorite food and animal), being with only each other for eleven days straight was a test. Some days were better than others, some bad directions and travel issues were a challenge for us, but throughout it all we had a great time together.
Being only with my cousin, I knew that we would occasionally have our differences but during these moments on the trip I felt as if I was growing as a person. We learned how to work with each other, and how to communicate effectively. Most of our minor issues during this trip came about because of poor communication. We learned this after several days but the rest of the trip was smooth traveling.
Experience does for the soul
What education does for the mind
The best experiences that I took away from this trip were all in some way or another from challenging myself. There were many times during this trip that I wanted to play it safe (the way I am comfortable with), but I knew that was not the reason I went on this trip. I went to not play it safe, I went to re-discover who I knew I was, someone who loves to try things, meet people and change things.
Occasionally, I would become hesitant, say “no” too quick, but that’s where my cousin Justin came in and convince me to give it a try. Whether it be trying raw fermented shark for the first time, driving up to the side of a glacier with hail and snow pelting us, going down into a 3×3 hole in a pitch black cave without any supervision, climbing over a frozen body of water up to the side of a waterfall, or swimming in 111 degree natural hot spring water, all forced me to focus and push past my fears, and each time I did that I felt a wave of happiness and love flow over me.
Find Out Who You Are
Those are the experiences that I went on the trip searching for.
Those experiences can only be obtained by pushing past your fears and truly finding out what you’re made of.
Experiences that will forever shape my life and change my perceptions of the world I live in.
Whether you’re doing one small thing that makes you uncomfortable or a large leap to push past your fears I recommend that you do, give it a try, make yourself feel uncertain, feel afraid of the unknown, take a risk, see what you are really capable of. The result just might surprise you.
Casey Neistat is one of my role models. For those of you who don’t know who Casey is he has been making a “daily vlog” for the past 500 some odd days. In the first vlog he told the world that he would be creating a new movie every day for a year. This was to challenge him creatively and make him focus on making something new and exciting. Each day he shared his views, past stories, and gave some profound advice. I am going to take a page from Casey Neistat’s book and say that
I will challenge myself to write a new post every day for a year.
I find myself in a rut creatively and If I put this post out into the world, online, then I will have to follow up and push myself to “ship” a new post everyday.
So stay tuned.
Recently a good friend of mine was having trouble sustaining his energy during his workouts. My friend is training in the Police Academy and they have been putting him through some rigorous and intense workouts. Often times running up to 2-3 hours of constant running and training. Just hearing about some of the training he has to go through I could tell that he would need a lot of energy. The type of energy you can only obtain by selecting the right foods pre workout foods. So he is an article dedicated to my friend and all those who would like some great pre workout foods!
You need to have a good balance of Carbohydrates & Protein for long lasting energy during your workout
Fun word to spell out and a great pre workout snack. This is because Bananas have fast acting carbohydrates, giving you the immediate energy you require for a workout or run. Potassium is an added bonus, as potassium helps the post workout muscle building process.
Throw in some peanut butter and presto! A delicious meal that is high in fiber. Essentially providing you with a long release of energy, during your workout.
Smoothies are the new craze, and I get why! Colorful and deliciously packed with High quality protein, simple and complex carbs. These will give you immediate energy as well as the long lasting energy your workout requires of you.
Eggs, preferably Egg Whites.
Eggs notoriously known as a super food because of its perfect macronutrient ratio, is also a great pre workout meal. However for intense workouts I’d recommend only the egg whites. This is because egg yolk metabolizes slowly and may make you feel bloated and sluggish. Great protein food!
Whole Grain Bread,
This bread can be Toast, Bagels, English Muffins, whatever your preference. The Whole Grain in the bread is jam packed with Fiber! Which is slowly released throughout workout duration.
Chicken Breast Brown Rice
If you got the time this meal is a staple pre workout/ post workout meal. This meal will sit well and provide you with a good deal of usable fuel, and minimal fat. Brown rice is a complex carb, slowly released. You can also substitute this with sweet potatoes, or other whole grains.
Better than regular yogurt. Double the protein and half the sugar (usually) good energy source that’s easy on the stomach (provided you are not lactose-intolerant).
These are only a handful of many pre workout foods that can give you the energy and necessary nutrients that workouts require of you. Please share with me what types of pre workout foods you like to eat, I’d love to hear from you. Thanks and go get that workout with all that extra energy you’ll have now!

Gary Vaynerchuk is the youtube channel for any entrepreneur hands down! He provides you with amazing content and strategies to excel in this increasingly digital world. Don’t take my advice for it, he has personally proven this time and time again. Widely referred to as the “Marketing Guru” he is always putting up new content and spreading his insights and knowledge on his channel. He has many segments such as “DailyVee” and my personal favorite “#TheAskGaryVeeShow“. Even after that he puts out some of his speaking engagements and short motivational clips of his quotes. Number 2: Christian Guzman

Christian Guzman only joined youtube in 2012 yet his channel has been increasingly popular. “Why” you might ask, this is because Christian is the embodiment of what so many of us want to become. I know I do. Christian puts up content on the topic of fitness and business. He originally started his channel to track his progress in the gym, you can go back to some of his first clips and see this young kid beginning to put on muscle to now a successful physique contest winner and business owner. I love his channel not only because he is an animal in the gym but because he has made so much progress in his life, family, relationships, business, and body. Youtube has given him an outlet and a place to upload his progress to an audience. I know I have enjoyed seeing him achieve the unthinkable and put in the time and work and not be fake about it. Christian is grateful to all those that support him and usually ends his videos with a positive moment of where he is in his life, the lessons he’s learned and the important things in life. It is truly hard to not love a person like that. Christian Guzman is a great channel to subscribe to if you are into fitness, self improvement, or overall entertainment.

Casey Neistat hands down my personal favorite YouTuber! You probably have seen at least one of his videos at some point in your life. His viral videos have been on new channels, all over youtube, as well as other social networking sites. Now in his about page on YouTube it says “Joined Feb 2010” and that is correct however he has been making viral videos before YouTube was even around. I mean like emailing videos to people… like whaaaaat?. Casey Neistat is my favorite channel because he posts daily Vlogs. Basically Casey made it a point to challenge himself each and every day to create and make a movie every single day. If that wasn’t challenging enough he is the only one who films and edits these videos.
Casey makes these videos more just just mere videos, he makes them into an art form, never reveling how much effort and time goes into his end product. He uses a variety of equipment to further his story telling ability and creative desires. With the utmost respect for Casey Neistat, Casey is almost like a fictional character, Riding his electric skateboard through the streets of NYC with his drone flying parallel to him, hanging out of helicopters, riding behind a Lamborghini attached to a rope. I mean Casey is amazing! Never fails to upload a vlog day after day after day and makes each one special, including his work, family, business, and past videos to enhance his storytelling ability. Casey also makes it an important part of his vlogs to share his own personal experiences and teaches his audience what matters most in life. His down to earthness, creative style and cartoon like character makes him my favorite youtuber.
FYI: Casey also won YouTuber of the year (2016)
He Earned it!
So what did you think? Again these are just the 5 channels that I like the most. Did I miss one that you think should be on the list. Leave a comment and share this video with your friends. Also one last note I too have a YouTube channel. I have some Daily Vlogs (Casey Neistat Style) and a few Travel videos from my resent trip. Check them out!
Until next time!

I am 22 years old and have dreams of starting and running my own business someday. I want to help the world, and I feel it is everyones purpose to help shape their own world. I have been in love with exercise and fitness for the past 6 years. I love it because I can see and feel the differences that eating right and working out can do to your body. I love to read books on self improvement, auto biographies of innovators and successful people (Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Arnold Schwarzenegger). I read these because I too want to make a difference in the world, and I feel like the best way to learn how to do something is to learn from those who have done the thing you wish to aspire to. I love my family and all the amazing times I’ve shared with them. They are my driving force behind my desire to be successful. And I also love to create things, ever since I was little I have been obsessed with making videos, building things and even writing. That is where I want to go, and where I am now. Join me.
