I’ve become more and more interested in the topic of resistance.
Resistance is something internal, something that holds us back from doing what we want to do with our lives. Your resistance is at work when you become afraid to post something on the internet, when you hold back and don’t talk to someone, when you tell yourself its easier to stay comfortable and safe. I hate resistance.
In his book War of Art Steven Pressfield talks on the conflict between creating authentic art and the war we have internally with fighting our inner resistance. As Steven Pressfield puts it “The resistance is the voice in the back of our head telling us to back off, be careful, go slow, compromise”. We tend to sabotage our efforts, this is mainly because we are afraid of succeeding, of making a difference, of leaving our resistance behind. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with this problem.
As I am writing this post I am struggling with my own resistance. I almost stopped writing this post, I was so close to hitting “delete”, to let my resistance win, but I recognized my resistance and instead of giving up saying “this is stupid” I challenged myself to finish this post and to share my thoughts on resistance.
I encourage you to do the same, the next time you want to do something, do it! Recognize your internal resistance when its telling you to not pursue something, recognize it and push through. This will help you become a more authentic human being and help you to contribute true art.
Question: When was the last time you have felt this internal resistance? Did you take control, or did your resistance win?
